Construction is officially underway in Charlestown, MA on a substantial renovation project of a 1930s classic 3-story Boston Public School (BPS) to temporarily house the Horace Mann School, BPS’ only public school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the oldest public day school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the United States.
New Beginnings
Front Elevation of the Existing Clarence R. Edwards School
On June 1, the demolition phase of the existing Clarence R. Edwards School commenced.
A new swing space, which will be the temporary home of the Horace Mann School (HMS), was chosen primarily because its architectural features either already were or could be adapted to be high on the Deaf Space criteria. Machado Silvetti, in collaboration with Jeffrey Mansfield, Deaf Design Consultant and architect, and David Stephen, Education Specialist from New Vista Design, have designed a space that is able to effectively accommodate the needs of their students, teachers and administration.
Within the next three weeks, the building will undergo demolition of the upper floors as well as abatement. Machado Silvetti and project team reference The Gallaudet University Deaf Space Principles in the design that provide unique considerations and opportunities. Not only are the needs and aspirations of the swing space considered, but the future, more permanent home of the HMS as well.
The renovation entails upgrades to the accessibility of the building, including a new main entrance to the side of the existing main entrance that will be fit with ramps compliant with ADA regulations. The building will also receive a new elevator and wheelchair lift, restroom upgrades, modifications in four stairwells, new stormwater recharge, mechanical, lighting, automatic fire protection and visual public announcement systems.
Spatial additions to the building include a two-room audiology booth, central office and evaluation office. Level one will share space with the Charlestown Early Education Program, with 6 classrooms and support spaces. In addition, there will be a shared gym, auditorium and cafeteria and HMS’ central offices, evaluation suite, art room and teaching kitchen. Level two will contain the HMS pre-K and elementary programs, and level three will be utilized for middle school and high school classrooms. Wayfinding upgrades will also play a meaningful role in the new space, using color for instance to help with students’ orientation in the long hallways.
New technology to support multi-modal learning will also be employed. This entails a new PA system, new finishes in classrooms, and upgraded science rooms fit with a new fume hood, eye wash, emergency shower, sinks, and lab tables.
Construction is scheduled to finish in the summer of 2024.
