Tun Razak Exchange
Master Plan for Kuala Lumpur
Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) includes 21 million square feet of office, residential, hospitality and retail space in downtown Kuala Lumpur. Machado Silvetti won an international competition in early 2011 to master-plan this development for TRX City SDN BHD on 75 acres of land. The site is just over 1 kilometer from the Kuala Lumpur City Center and the Petronas Towers.

Client: TRX City SDN BHD
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Year: 2011-2013
Status: Construction in Progress
Site Context
TRX is uniquely situated at the southern gateway to the city center and adjacent to the Golden Triangle which serves as the city's commercial, shopping and entertainment hub. The privileged site is to be directly connected to Kuala Lumpur International Airport by dedicated ramps leading to and from the adjacent MEX Highway, as well as to the city's key public district via improved pedestrian streetscapes leading to and from the Bukit Bintange district nearby. A new Mass Rapid Transit station sill anchor the site's northeast corner, providing direct access to the site for thousands of daily commuters.
Key Design Elements
The project establishes a landmark district of global significance, accommodating leading Malaysian and international financial institutions and regulatory bodies, as well as associated residential, cultural and retail functions. TRX will be a vibrant commercial hub for Malaysia and Southeast Asia, designed to international standards, ensuring elegant, efficient, safe and sustainable living and working environments. Key design challenges include a very high, site-wide, floor-to-area ratio in multiple high- and mid-rise buildings, a high parking requirement, accommodation for vehicular traffic in a way that does not overwhelm the pedestrian realm and the provision of a large public amenity in the form of a Public Green.
Sustainability
TRX is designed to international best practices for sustainable design and will incorporate site wide shared utilities as well as Smart City design principles. These elements, combined with an elegant overall design and a public realm design that gives prominence to all buildings on site and public green space, combine to create a cohesive and signature international financial district. The detailed Master Plan was formally launched by the client in July 2012. A marketing gallery, also designed by Machado Silvetti, has been constructed and preliminary earthwork on-site has commenced as of September 2012.
